Dr. Zaid Hussein Ali, Head of the Electrical Engineering Technology Department at Hawija Polytechnic College, Northern Technical University—in collaboration with a research team from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary—has published a new scientific research paper in Scientific Reports, a journal affiliated with the Nature Portfolio, titled:
“Voltage Peak Shaping for Increased PV Hosting Capacity Using a Multi-Frequency DVR”
The journal is considered one of the prestigious international publications, boasting an Impact Factor of 4.9 for 2025 and a CiteScore of 6.4, alongside a Q1 ranking in the Scopus database.
The study focuses on developing an innovative technique for shaping voltage peaks using a multi-frequency Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR). The goal is to enhance the capacity of low-voltage distribution networks to integrate power generated from photovoltaic (PV) systems without requiring the replacement of network conductors or major structural modifications.
Experimental results demonstrated the ability to increase the injected active power from PV systems from 64.4 kW to 91.84 kW in a 3-wire network, and up to 120 kW in a 4-wire network, all while maintaining voltage limits and power quality standard compliance.
This achievement reflects the ongoing efforts of the Northern Technical University—represented by Hawija Polytechnic College and the Department of Electrical Engineering Technology—to support applied scientific research and advance modern solutions in renewable energy, power electronics, and electrical grid performance optimization.
